Clearwater County, AB

A successful build that alleviated inefficiencies and came in under budget.

Evan Stewart, Deputy Fire Chief, was eager to build a local training centre. This new centre would help alleviate time and financial costs associated with having to travel to Red Deer for training. As a response to these logistics burdens effecting instructors and staff, Clearwater Regional Fire Rescue Services partnered with community organizations and Fire Training Solutions. They created a two-phase approach, the burn tower being phase one. The needs and wants of the department were met, resulting in a successful build that came in under budget.

This structure includes:

  • Nine containers
  • Three exterior and five interior stairs
  • Interior steel maze with adjustable walls
  • Roof simulator
  • Two Class A burn rooms with an electronic temperature monitoring system
  • Two forcible entry doors
  • Multi-level manhole hatches
  • Brushed cement floors
  • Elevator door simulator
  • Confined space training room
  • Multiple rappel hooks, tie-off hooks, and bailout hooks

“The Training Staff worked directly with with the design engineer and Fire Training Solutions on a draft design. This design was converted into a virtual model which was an awesome opportunity to ‘walk’ through the layout and make sure everything would flow as intended. The final draft was approved and fabrication started. During the construction phase on site, having someone present in the design phase was key and allowed the build to go seamlessly.”

– Even Stewart, Deputy Fire Chief
